Anticipation For Explanation At Tribunal From Ahern

Anticipation is mounting over the former Taoiseach's explanation regarding alleged large sterling payments lodged into his account.

Bertie Ahern will be reappearing at the Mahon Tribunal over the coming days where he is expected to provide an explanation over revelations by his former secretary.

Startling evidence from his secretary Grainne Carruth revealed several large sterling lodgements up to stg£15,000 were made in the mid 1990s. Mr Ahern had previously testified no such payments had been made.

The stinging, tearful testimony from Ms Carruth is believed to have been the major catalyst to Mr Ahern's early resignation.

Mr Ahern has yet to provide any public response to the direct contradiction in his tribunal evidence, although he described the inquiry's treatment of Ms Carruth as "low-life stuff".

Early reports are suggesting Mr Ahern is planning to tell the tribunal he had some of his salary cheques converted into sterling, changed back into punts, and then lodged to the building society accounts.

He is also expected to claim that he converted a number of Irish-pound cheques paid to him as Minister for Finance into the British currency.

Mr Ahern will then say Ms Carruth reconverted the sterling cash into Irish pounds before lodging the proceeds into his account and into those of his two daughters.

Mr Ahern will also face questions on the purchase of his house by Manchester businessman, Michael Wall.
