Over 65,000 Builders Unemployed By Next Year

A report by the national employment authority has said over one quarter of builders will be out of work by the end of next year.

The report is said to suggest that the massive job losses in the country's largest industry will send unemployment soaring and leave tens of thousands of young men on the dole.

A total of 65,400 of the 279,000 currently employed construction workers will be forced out of work due to the continuing economic downturn and plummeting value of new property.

The FAS document reportedly shows 35,800 craft workers, including bricklayers, 9,000 scaffolders and roofers, 10,000 general workers and 2,100 architects and quantity surveyors will all be ousted from their current roles.

However, the report is also said to predict the creation of 20,000 new jobs as part of the governments National Development Plan, although this would require a major training programme for the new roles.

It is believed the growing lack of opportunities here will result in builders and construction workers looking overseas for the opportunities that are quickly diminishing here.
