Friend's Killer Sentenced

The violent death of a Ringsend teenager was recalled today as the 20-year-old Dublin man who killed him was sentenced to eight years in prison.

Mark Green of Trintonville Road in Sandymount was convicted in April of the manslaughter of his friend, 19-year-old Alan Young from George Reynolds House, Ringsend, in March 2007.

The trial heard the pair had been friends for a number of years but after a number of altercations Green had waved a knife at Alan Young in Irishtown in Dublin.

Mr Young was then stabbed in the heart as he lunged forward.

Passing sentence, Mr Justice Paul Carney said he had to balance Green's previous good character and his offer to plead guilty to manslaughter with the fact that he had armed himself with a sharp knife and the effect the killing had on the victim's family.

Afterwards, Mr Young's family said no prison sentence would replace him but they had no dispute with the length of sentence.
