Third Farm Organisation Advises Yes Vote

A third leading farmers' union has given its backing to the Lisbon treaty 'Yes' campaign, following in the footsteps of two other major unions.

The move is a further boost for supporters of the Lisbon Treaty following the decision of the farm organisation to back a Yes vote in next week's referendum.

The Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers' Association says its delegates made the decision by a narrow margin at a meeting last night.

The IFA and the ICMSA have already come out in support of a Yes vote, despite threatening to campaign against the treaty due to concerns about the EU's stance in world trade talks.

The unions removed their threat to advise a 'No' to their members prior to meetings with Taoiseach Brian Cowen where he vowed to veto an ongoing World Trade Organisation deal that could potentially seriously hurt Irish farmers.

FG unveils Lisbon Treaty campaign
Fine Gael has launched a €500,000 ad campaign for a Yes vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum. The Oireachtas opposition party began lobbying in early March with a series of public meetings on the referendum. But its official campaign will include nationwide and online advertising, a new website and literature explaining the treaty.

Cowen Under Pressure To Keep Lisbon Alive
Brian Cowen is facing mounting pressure on his next move following the Lisbon Treaty 'No' vote. European Union foreign ministers insisted on Monday that the EU reform treaty was alive despite Ireland's 'No' vote although conceded they had no "quick fixes" for rescuing it.
