Chernobyl Children Arrive In Ireland

More than 1,000 children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster are flying into Ireland today as part of their annual summer holiday.

The scheme, which is now in its 17th year, allows children who live in the centre of the Chernobyl zone and contaminated Belarus, a holiday and a break away from their own environment.

Hundreds of Irish families tend to the young visitors for the duration of the holidays which last up to three months long.

Adi Roche, Chief Executive Officer of Chernobyl Children’s Project International (CCPI), said: "We are very proud to say that this year we will see over 1,000 children receive recuperation through the warmth and loving kindness of hundreds of Irish families.

"So many of these trips are made possible by the unwavering commitment of volunteer host families the length and breadth of Ireland."

Almost 500 families became homeless in Dublin in 2014, new figures from Focus Ireland have revealed. The charity, which supports homeless families, said that more than 1,000 children lost their homes last year when their families became homeless.

Vodaphone Partners With ISPCC To Help Keep Children Safe
Telecoms giant Vodaphone has announced a five-year partnership with the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC). The partnership aims to help keep children safe. Vodaphone Ireland Foundation will provide the charity with €2 million in direct funding over five years.

Irish Water Safety Reveals Holiday Weekend Warning
Irish Water Safety, the statutory body that promotes water safety in Ireland, has urged the public to take care over the May Bank Holiday weekend, if pursuing water-based activities. The body has reported there are 140 drownings in Ireland every year, amounting to over five every two weeks.

Irish Tourist Drowns In Pool On His First Holiday Abroad
An Irish Tourist has died in a hotel swimming pool during his first holiday abroad. Keith Murphy, 20, was dragged limp from the pool at the Jable Bermuda Apartments, Lanzarote only hours after he checked into the resort on Sunday evening.
