Fishermen Continue To Protest In Cork Harbour

Fishermen are continuing their protest against the ever increasing fuel prices in Cork Harbour this morning.

Boats from Dunmore-East, Kinsale, Kilmore Quay and Castletownbere will be taking part in the demonstration.

Last week, the Federation of Irish Fishermen (FIF) staged a march to Leinster House in Dublin and warned that unless the EU introduces subsidies for the industry, then huge numbers of fishermen face bankruptcy.

The FIF claims 50 to 70% of a trawler's turnover is being spent on fuel.

FIF Chairman Michael Walsh said: "Fishermen's patience at the current situation is stretched to breaking point. They are demanding a credible and early response from our government. Only a demonstration of real commitment to the survival of the sector will suffice at this stage. FIF cannot over emphasise the depth of feeling within the industry on this issue."
