"Miracle" No One Was Hurt As Building Collapses In Cork
Shoppers had a lucky escape yesterday as a building in one of Cork's shopping districts partially collapsed onto the street.
The three-storey building on Shandon Street in Cork city was beside another premises under renovation when scaffolding and debris crashed onto the pavement and road.
Debris fell onto a parked car nearby and caused substantial damage to an adjacent public phonebox.
Former Cork Lord Mayor Cllr Damian Wallace, who operates a nearby auctioneering firm, said he was first alerted when he heard a loud crash outside.
"There was dust and dirt everywhere. From what I could see, the building had collapsed onto the street and the pavement. It was a miracle that no-one was killed or seriously injured," he said.
Shandon Street is one of Cork's busiest streets both for pedestrians and motorists. The area was immediately sealed off by gardai amid fears of further masonry collapses as members of Cork Fire Brigade conducted preliminary investigations into the cause.
