Ireland Says 'No!'
An early opinion poll has suggested Ireland could be saying 'No' in the Lisbon Treaty referendum.
The early figures released by an Irish National paper reveals a TNS/mrbi poll shows the 'No' camp is currently holding a 5% lead.
The revelation marks a public opinion u-turn on the referendum, which had up to last week consistently saw 'Yes' holding a majority position.
With just a week to polling day, the turnaround has been a major coup for the anti-Lisbon groups such as Libertas and Sinn Fein.
The poll shows the 'Yes' side at 30%, down five points since their last poll three weeks ago, while the 'No' side is at 35%, up a staggering 17%, with 'Don't Knows' down 12 at 35%.
If the result is repeated next week, it will be a crushing defeat for the government, leaving the treaty effectively dead.
However, speaking at Fianna Fails last major press conference before the referendum proper on Thursday, Mr Cowen said he believed a majority of Irish voters would support the Lisbon Treaty.
He said he believed there had been a swing to the 'Yes' side in recent days following the opinion poll predicting victory for the 'No' camp.
Meanwhile, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said on Tuesday the government was lying when it said a better deal could not be negotiated.
