Irish Men Now Living It Up

The gap in life expectancy between men and women in Ireland has narrowed to its lowest for 35 years.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) report, a compilation of statistics called Measuring Ireland's Progress 2007, found that men's life expectancy has increased by 1.6 years since 2001 in comparison with 1.2 years for women.

Females can now expect to live for 81.5 years compared to 76.7 for men, a difference of 4.8 years, according to the CSO report.

Other statistics in the publication reveal Irish young people are among the most highly educated in the EU.

It found that 41.3% of the population aged 25 to 34 had completed third level education.

This is the second highest proportion in the EU, and well above the EU average of 29.1%.

It also found that Irish students aged 15 years had the second highest level of reading literacy in the EU in 2006.

However, it wasn't all good news as the proportion of Irish people at risk of poverty was shown to be above the EU average at 18%, with 6.9% of people in consistent poverty in 2006.
