Council Approves Electric Car Scheme

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has become the first local authority in Ireland to approve a scheme encouraging the use of environmentally friendly electric cars.

The council voted in favour of a plan to install chargers for electric vehicles in public areas, offer free parking to the drivers of these cars and allow them to use bus lanes at peak times.

Recent advances have meant electric cars can now perform on a par with their petrol counterparts, and re-charge times have also reduced low enough to rival normal filling up times.

The famous Tesla Roadster, entering into production this year, is one of the first commercially available electric sports cars, with a 0-60 of four seconds and top speed of up to 125 mph.

Compared to a petrol engine, the amount of fuel needed to power a Tesla Roadstar would be equivalent to a normal car running at 220 miles to the gallon.

Suppliers of electric cars have been calling on all councils throughout Ireland to adopt such measures as part of campaigns to reduce carbon emissions.
