Toxic Cyanide Gas To Be Destroyed At Army Base
Canisters containing toxic gas are to be destroyed at an Irish army base after they were discovered by a well known pest control company.
A total of seven canisters were found by the company Retokil during an audit in their Dublin facilities.
Kilbride army base in north Wicklow, which is used for training and weapons testing, will be used to destroy the chemical between June 23 and June 26.
The chemical, hydrogen cyanide, has not been used in Europe for a number of years, and is a colourless, very poisonous, and highly volatile liquid that boils slightly above room temperature.
It has a faint, bitter, almond-like odour that some people are unable to detect, and was used as a Nazi chemical weapon during the second world war.
It was then used for insect killing but has been largely left redundant throughout the EU for pest control for sometime.
