Young Offenders Up 20% In Recent Years
A leading children's charity has expressed concern over reports of a 20% increase in the number of children involved in crime.
The Children's Rights Alliance voiced their concerns after reports emerged on Monday saying the number of under 18s referred to the Gardaí's youth diversion programme was up from 17,500 in 2005 to 21,000 last year.
Equating to a rise of 20%.
The increase has reportedly been driven by a large rise in alcohol-related offences. The Children's Rights Alliance says this link to alcohol is particularly concerning. The charity outlined a number of ways to deal with the link between underage drinking and crime such as strong leadership by political, health and community institutions, and new procedures by the health and social services to screen for alcohol problems, and prioritise and plan for children at risk.
The organisation also says there is little capacity within communities to tackle alcohol problems for young people, and that more needs to be done.
