Dept Of Environment Accused Of 'Cover-Up'
The Department of the Environment has been accused of a "cover-up" over highly hazardous waste buried at what is reportedly "the largest and most extensive pollution incident in the history of the State".
Almost 500,000 tonnes of the hazardous chemical Hexavalent chromium was buried at Haulbowline Island in Cork harbour. The chemical came from the former Irish Ispat steel plant on the Island, which closed in 2001.
Responsibility for the site was taken over by the Department for the Environment in 2003, who have spent the past five years trying to establish what exactly was buried there.
A sub-contractor involved in a surface clearance at the site has been reported to claim to have uncovered dangerous levels of the toxin hexavalent chromium or Chromium 6, and has accused the Department of Environment of a cover-up to conceal the health risks which the waste poses, saying they were told to "cap" lagoons containing hazardous waste, rather than remove the potentially deadly material.
However, the Department has denied this and Mr Gormley says his officials are finalising a report on the options for dealing with the dump at Haulbowline.
