L-Driver Laws Come Into Force Tonight
The new laws clamping down on provisional licence-holders are due to come into force on Monday at midnight.
From Tuesday morning, all learner drivers will have to be accompanied by an experienced driver who has held a full licence for at least two years.
The changes have been brought as part of a push by the government and gardaí forces to curtail the level of accidents on Ireland’s roads.
Almost 336,000 people in Ireland have provisional driving licences and around one third of those are waiting to sit a driving test.
Over 15,000 provisional licence holders applied for their driving test last week, a 100% increase on the usual level of requests received by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).
RSA Chief Executive Noel Brett said the numbers who would be affected by the change dropped from 120,000 when it was mooted, last October, to around 92,000 today.
In that period, 95,000 drivers sat their test with an average pass rate of 59%.
Speaking over the weekend, Communications Minister Eamon Ryan said he was confident the Gardaí would be able to enforce the changes effectively.
"I think it is a progressive measure - one which I supported at the time - and I think it is part of a package of measures, which we are starting to see take effect, in terms of lower road fatalities and better road safety."
