Killarney Mayor To Face Trial Over Land Deal
The Mayor of Killarney is to face a trial by jury next October over inappropriate land dealing.
Patrick O'Donoghue has been charged with seeking to influence the decision of Killarney Town Council regarding a motion about re-zoning family lands near the Gleneagle Hotel.
He is also charged with failing to withdraw from the meeting when the motion was being discussed, contrary to the Local Government Acts.
It is the first time ever that the state watchdog body has investigated members of a local authority and officials will seek to determine whether the two councillors have breached ethical laws.
The charges follow a hearing last year by the Standards in Public Office Commission, the findings of which were sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The Fianna Fail councillor denies any wrongdoing. The case will be heard before Tralee Circuit Criminal Court on October 6th and is expected to last four days.
The Fianna Fáil councillor was nevertheless elected unopposed as mayor of Killarney in only the last few weeks, after receiving the unanimous support of his fellow councillors.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Fianna Fáil Councillor Eibhlin Byrne was announced as the new Lord Mayor of Dublin City.
She received a total of 29 votes following a pact with the Labour group on Dublin City Council, defeating candidates from Fine Gael and Sinn Féin.
