Ryanair's Aer Lingus Stake 'Takes Off'

Ryanair has again raised its stake in Aer Lingus, brining its ownership to almost 30%.

The budget airline last night announced a 3.5 million shares transaction, creating a 29.82% share, brining total share holdings to 159,231,025.

Ryanair, who previous attempted to mount a hostile takeover of its rival, has not revealed the value of the Aer Lingus transaction.

However, media reports have suggested that 31 million Aer Lingus shares have been sold at a €20 million loss for the company. One newspaper has alleged developer Liam Carroll sold his shares for €1.15 each.

Stockbrokers have described the latest deal as a "fire sale", which could have yielded Mr Carroll €40.25m, after purchasing the shares for €2million earlier this year.

Mr Carroll is one of Ireland’s most successful developers, with his Dublin-based company Zelderbridge holding over 60 subsidiaries.

Ryanair share prices dropped 4.5% in the capital today, and now stand at €2.49, down 11%.
