Daíl Pay Rises To Be Stopped
The Taoiseach is to face major opposition as a litany of spending cuts is announced, including a stop on Daíl wage increases.
Up to €500m will be slashed from the budgets of all departments to compensate for the drop in tax incomes for the first half of 2008.
The Cabinet’s controversial pay rises, due in September, are expected to be on the chopping board as a range of departments tighten their belts with cuts in recruitment, advertising and consultancy services to generate some savings.
Some National Development Plan projects may also be delayed to help build on the expected €5bn in tax revenues expected by the end of the year.
It is thought the move will spark protests from Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny and Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore due to Mr Cowen’s bypassing of the Daíl to make the initial announcement.
The Opposition feel such announcements of changes to spending policies should be made in the Dail rather than to the press.
A major debate on the economy and the €22bn National Development Plan takes place in the Dáil on Wednesday and Thursday.
