Independent Councillor Defects To Fine Gael

An independent councillor has announced he is defecting to the Government's opposition party, Fine Gael.

Councillor Derek Keating, who is a Dublin West Councillor, was welcomed by Fine Gael leader Enda Kelly who said Mr Keating’s decision was another vote of confidence for his party.

"I'd like to formally welcome Derek Keating to the Fine Gael ranks and wish him well as he joins our team on South Dublin County Council.

"I am delighted that the very important constituency of Dublin Mid West, which has been re-energised locally will now have Fine Gael Local Authority representation."

Derek Keating is well known in the Lucan area and last week opened a skate park in the area.

Announcing his move, Mr Keating said: "As an Independent Councillor, elected first in 1999, I decided it was time to review how best I could represent the people that elected me.

"I have been very impressed by Fine Gael's recent electoral success at both local and national level and felt that being part of that strong organisation could help me better serve the interests of my electorate."

Councillor Keating lives in Lucan with his wife Anne and two daughters. He was elected to South Dublin County Council in 1999
