Homeless Hunger Striker Takes To Roof

A father of five has began a hunger strike on the roof of a Dublin City Council apartment block over the council's removing him from his accommodation.

Gearld Taaffe, 41, of O'Devaney Gardens, is being forced from his rented accommodation by the city council on Friday as the building is renovated, however, they have not arranged alternative living quarters.

The unemployed father started his protest yesterday afternoon after returning from the local council offices, where he was told he would have nowhere to live after Friday.

He has been in his council subsidised rented flat for five years, but it is to be vacated by the weekend as part of the re-development plans for the complex.

Family and friends of Mr Taaffe have attempted to coax him down without success, and have left him some bedding as he continues the protest.
