All Flights Grounded To And From Dublin Airport

All flights in and out of Dublin's international airport have been cancelled.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) took the decision following a major fault in the airport's radar system. Air traffic controllers could not see the codes used to label incoming aircraft, forcing all planes to be grounded until the problem is resolved.

Restrictions were initially being placed on the number of flights landing at the airport after part of the system failed to function for 10 minutes just before midday.

The Irish Aviation Authority said there had been a number of problems with the system over the past few weeks, but that engineers were examining the equipment.

A spokesperson for the IAA said the problem was first reported at 11.45am on Wednesday and was fully functioning 10 minutes later, but the system failed a second time.

"When the fault happened a second time at 1.30pm, we didn't have the confidence to continue," she said.

"Safety is our overriding concern and in the interest of safety we shut down the system from 2.45pm."

"We hope to have it back at 3.00pm but that will be reviewed."

The number of flights arriving at Dublin Airport has been reduced to 14 per hour, as opposed to the usual 40-46.

Intending passengers are being advised to check with their airline for more information regarding flights in and out of Dublin.
