Crew Saved From Sinking Trawler Blaze

Ten Spanish fishermen have been rescued from a fishing trawler ablaze and sinking off the west coast of Ireland on Thursday morning.

The French-registered Koaxi issued a May Day call from a position around 30 miles west of Loop Head just after 10am.

The Spanish crew had been fighting a fire in the engine room before the vessel caught fire and began to sink.

A Shannon-based Coastguard helicopter already airborne on a training mission was dispatched to the scene upon receiving the call.

But the crew of the Koaxi had already escaped to safety before its arrival after Valentia Coastguard Radio, who coordinated the rescue operation, relayed the May Day call to other fishing vessels in the area, alerting a nearby French crew.

The Irish Coast Guard said the first call was made from the vessel at 9.10am. "Another French boat, the Concerto, was travelling nearby and took all 10 crew on board," a spokeswoman said. "There were no injuries and nobody had to be taken to hospital."
