Farmers To Demonstrate Over Trade Talks
The long running dispute between Irish farmers and Peter Mandelson has sparked plans for a protest by Irish farmers.
The Irish Famers Association (IFA) has said it plans to hold a demonstration outside Government Buildings on Monday to highlight what it believes is 'profoundly damaging' work by Mr Mandelson at the World Trade Organisation talks.
The organisation further said it will be maintaining constant vigilance as a critical phase of the trade negotiations begins in Geneva this week.
It says that if necessary, it will call on the Taoiseach's veto commitment to prevent what it says will be the destruction of the Irish farming sector if the current WTO deal is pushed through.
The President of the IFA, Pádraig Walshe, is also to meet with the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy during the French leader's visit to Ireland to discuss the Lisbon Treaty.
Speaking on Irish radio on Monday morning, Mr Walshe said: "I will be asking President Sarkozy to keep in mind the attitude of rural Ireland with regard to any future support for the whole European ideal... will be profoundly damaged if Mandelson gets his way."
The IFA says that the deal would cost the Irish economy €4bn in losses every year and 50,000 farmers would be put out of business.
