Price Increase For Gas Customers
Irish households and small businesses can expect a gas price hike of around 20% this autumn - and long haul flights are to cost more too.
Bord Gáis has been granted permission to increase tariffs by the energy regulator, taking affect from 1 September.
The gas provider also warned the Commission for Energy Regulation of the possibility of further price rises in the new year.
Bord Gáis has attributed this to the growing world-wide stretch on gas resources during the past year.
The regulator described the latest price increase as regrettable but inevitable.
According to the energy commission, Ireland imports 90% of its gas resources from the UK, which has experienced over a 50% increase in wholesale prices in the last 12 months.
Two prices hikes will be implemented in a bid to cushion the blow for consumers, according to the regulator.
Customers can expect the rate of the second increase to be revealed in November, with the regulator insisting it would be dependent on the state of the gas market.
Gas prices for Northern Ireland customers rose by 28% in May, with the rest of the UK experiencing a 15% rise in the last year.
Meanwhile, the national carrier, Aer Lingus is to increase its long haul fuel surcharge on four of its US routes with a jump of €10 each flight leg.
The fuel surcharge on flights to Chicago will increase from €75 to €85, flights to Orlando from €85 to €95 and flights to San Francisco and Los Angeles from €100 to €110.
Surcharges on New York, Boston and Washington Dulles flights - the shorter sector services to the US - remain unchanged.
Aer Lingus says the price increase is a result of the 50% increase in jet fuel spot prices since the beginning of the year.
