Blaze On Irish Ferries Vessel Threatens 200

Over 200 passengers prepared to abandon ship after an Irish ferry vessel went on fire early on Wednesday morning.

The blaze started in the engine room on level two of the Irish ferries ship, which was docked at the Isle of Inishmore at Pembroke Dock in West Wales, shortly after 2.30am.

The fault occurred in the thermal oil boiler, causing a minor fire. It was detected by members of the crew and the unit was shut down.

Firefighters were called to the Irish Ferries boat contained the fire in a small area and foam used to put out the blaze.

All 227 passengers and 89 crew on board the huge vessel were told to prepare to leave the ship just before the firefighters brought the blaze under control.

According to Irish Ferries, all passengers were safe and unharmed and at no point were any passengers in danger.

As a result of the fire, the affected 02.45hrs sailing from Pembroke and the 08.45hrs sailing from Rosslare were cancelled

Later sailings at 14.30 from Pembroke and at 21.00 from Rosslare are expected to operate subject to delay.

Irish Guardsman Dies In Afghan Firefight
The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson has this morning expressed his sympathy to the family of a soldier from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards who has been killed in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that he was shot in an ambush while patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.

Russian Espionage Scandal Used Irish Passports
It has emerged that at least one false Irish passport was used by a Russian spy ring allegedly operating in the US. The passport is said to have been passed to a Richard Murphy, who is among 11 people currently under trail in Manhattan Federal court, charged with being a Russian spy.
