Garda Launch Road Safety Campaign
With the Bank Holiday weekend approaching, garda have launched a road safety campaign to curtail the ever-rising death toll on Ireland’s roads.
According to a garda source, a total of 165 people have been killed on in traffic accidents so far this year.
Garda will be mounting extra patrols and an increased presence on the roads this weekend in a push for improving road safety.
A garda spokesman said: "Inappropriate speed, as the single greatest contributory factor to road deaths, will be a priority over this period.
"The same period last year saw four road fatalities and 2,545 detections for speeding, one needless death for each day of the bank holiday. Drivers are urged to drive within the speed limit and at a speed appropriate to the road environment and driving conditions."
Last year, a total of 384 drink driving incidents were recorded during the August Bank Holiday weekend, an increase on 2006's level.
Garda say alcohol is the second greatest contributory factor to road deaths and injuries, and the operation will be focused on drink driving, and there are plans to implement the extensive use of Mandatory Alcohol Testing checkpoints.
"Those going on long journeys therefore should plan their journeys in advance and drivers should stop in a safe place if they feel tired and take a short nap or break away from the road," the spokesman added.
