Data Protection "Weak" As Confidential Documents Are Lost

An audit by the Data Protection Commissioner has revealed weaknesses in Ireland's personal information protection procedures after boxes of personal documents were found near a lift.

According to the Data Commissioners report, crates of documents filled with personal details were discovered next to a lift during an audit at the Department of Social and Family Affairs (DFSA).

The DSFA holds extensive personal information about its customers in order to conduct its day to day business, and has said in its defence that the 37-page report listed a series of recommendations, which it has responded to in detail covering access management, security, data sharing and data protection policies.

"The Department takes its responsibilities to protect this information very seriously and has, for some time, been engaged in a broad programme of work to enhance the effectiveness of its information security controls," said a spokesman.

He added: "Some improvements have already been implemented while others will be incorporated into the Department's wider information security works programme."

The initial audit took place amid growing concerns over data protection practises in the department.
