Mallow Hit By Surprise Flood
Gardaí in Mallow are warning motorists to avoid the town after Friday afternoons deluge.
The unseasonal rains have persisted throughout the week and led to sporadic flooding throughout the island.
A Gardaí spokesman said: "Due to considerable localised flooding, Gardai in Mallow are asking motorists to avoid Mallow town and use alternative routes if possible for the next several hours."
Diversions are in place locally and considerable delays can be expected.
Met Eireann have also issued a small craft warning amid the extreme conditions. The Met Office website said: "Southwest winds will reach force 6 [Friday] evening on coasts from Belfast Lough to Howth Head to Carnsore."
Updates will be provided as the situation develops.

Fianna Fáil has called on insurance companies to provide flood cover to households and businesses in Cork City. TD for Cork South Central, Michael McGrath, has called on insurers to offer the cover again once major flood relief works are carried out in the city.

Galway is in urgent need of government assistance following repeated flooding across the region. Making the call, Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East, Anne Rabbitte, has also called on the acting Minister for Flood Relief to introduce long promised flood defence measures in the county, as well as requesting emergency roads funding.

Elderly Woman Killed In Collision In Mallow
Gardaí in Co Cork have issued an appeal for information following a fatal road traffic collision involving a car and a truck on Thursday 19 December. The collision occurred at approximately 12:55pm on the N20 at Clough Lucas, Mallow, Co. Cork A woman, aged in her early 90s, was taken to Cork University Hospital where she later passed away.
