Body Of First Irish Man To Climb K2 To Remain

The body of the Limerick man who was the first Irishman to climb the second highest mountain in the world will not be recovered from K2.

The remains of 37 year-old Gerard McDonnell lies among a group of other climbers believed to have been killed on the mountain.

Pakistan rescue workers have announced they will not be recovering the bodies.

The group including Mr McDonnell died on their descent after reaching the summit on Friday.

President Mary McAleese has led tributes to the Mr McDonnell and members of Gerard's family may fly to Islamabad in the coming days.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation.

The exact number of missing climbers is still unclear but at least nine are understood to have died on K2 and more are still classified as missing.

The family of Mr McDonnell, from Limerick, are reported to have said they are proud of his many heroic and brave achievements and are trying to come to terms with the news he will not be returning home.

Climber's Family Meet Expedition Leader
The brother and girlfriend of Limerick man, Gerard McDonnell, who has died during his desent from the K2 mountain last week - and whose remains are to be left on the peak - are already on the scene, having travelled to meet the leader of the original expedition when Mr McDonnell first went missing.

Fatal Assault In Sligo
Gardai are investigating a fatal assault in Sligo that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning. A man aged 23 admitted to Sligo General Hospital was declared dead at 6:10am. The scene at Joe McDonnell Drive in Cranmore has been sealed off and is currently being examined.

Body Found In Co Donegal
Gardai have launched an investigation after a body was discovered in Bundoran, Co Donegal, this morning (25 April). The body, believed to be a man aged in his 60's or 70's, was found near the shore in the West End of the town. It is believed the body remains at the scene.

Public Hearings To Be Held Over Waterford Mortuary Concerns
A series of public hearings are to be held to discuss the ongoing issues with Waterford Mortuary, after a number of pathologists condemned the condition of the facility. Consultants claimed dead bodies had been left on trolleys at the University Hospital Waterford, causing body fluids to leak on the floor.
