Cowen To Rejuvenate Pay Deal Talks

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, is to meet employers and unions in the coming weeks to see if the negotiations over a national pay agreement can be 'rescued'.

The talks broke down without agreement earlier this month, with unions rejecting employers' demands for a pay freeze of between six and 12 months in different sectors of the economy.

Meanwhile, the Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has said: "Employers will have to take a hit in pay talks."

Mr Lenihan warned employers that they will have to 'climb-down' on some of their demands if the national pay talks are to be salvaged.

Unions have been pessimistic about the prospects for a deal, but Minister Lenihan is reported as saying on Tuesday that workers cannot be expected to shoulder the burden of the economic downturn alone.

He also expressed concern about the high levels of profit-taking at senior positions in the private sector.
