Lorry Driver Released Following €2m Cig Seizure
A lorry driver has been released following the seizure of €2million worth of illegal cigarettes.
The man was detained on Monday morning after customs officers discovered the contraband cigarettes on Saturday following the arrival of a lorry at Rosslare Europort from Cherbourg in France.
The lorry remained in the port while officers watched the container overnight, only moving in to seize the cargo after no attempt was made to move it over the weekend.
Officers found over six million cigarettes were concealed in containers marked "fruit and veg".
A spokesman for the Revenue Commissioners said the cigarettes would have had a street value of €2.2m and the potential loss to the exchequer would have been €1.65m.
The seized cigarettes were mainly L&M and Regal brands.
The lorry and trailer were also seized and the driver was quizzed before being released.
Customs officers believe the cigarettes originated in Spain and investigations are ongoing with the assistance of gardai and other European forces.
