Galway Marks Anniversary Of NY Plane Crash
The people of Galway have joined together to pay their respects to the 99 passengers who died in an air crash off the Irish west coast 50 years ago.
On 14 August, 1958, KLM flight 607-E was on route from Amsterdam, headed for New York, but shortly after a short stop at Shannon Airport, the plane crashed into the sea 180 kilometres west of the Galway coast.
It was the worst air accident in the Atlantic Ocean at the time, and only 34 bodies were ever recovered. No salvage effort was ever attempted.
A mass grave was opened for the bodies at New Cemetery in Bohermore, and at the time, the whole city of Galway ground to a halt as the funeral mass took place on August 19.
At the cemetery for yesterday's memorial were members of Galway City council, representatives of KLM, the Dutch Ambassador to Ireland Robert Engels, along with some of the Galway people who took part in the original operation.
Mr Engels paid tribute to the efforts of the Galway people in 1958. "I am very grateful to the city of Galway for the attention given to this event," the Ambassador said.
"Today we gather as a result of Galway's wish to commemorate those victims and for that I thank them."
Due to lack of evidence, Irish and Dutch investigators never pinpointed a probable cause for the accident.
