Education Minister Agrees To Listen To Bishop

The Minister for Education has "agreed to listen" to an outspoken Bishop on the role of the church in the Irish education system.

Bishop Leo O'Reilly, Chairman of the Irish Bishops' Conference Commission on Education, made outspoken comments during an address to the Parnell Summer School in Co Wicklow, where he said the Catholic Church "makes no apology for its ongoing presence in education delivery."

Following the remarks, the Minister for Education Batt O'Keeffe said his Department was aware of the views expressed by Bishop O'Reilly from previous discussions.

"They will be considered along with the views of other patron interests, and the wider education partners, as future policy in this area evolves," he said.

Bishop O'Reilly criticised a recent Department of Education dossier, complaining it only briefly acknowledges the Church's long-time role in running hundreds of schools across the country.

"The only mention of school patrons, who are after all the providers of education, in the entire document is in this brief paragraph which seems to relegate them to the past and seems to consign their role in school ownership to history," said Bishop O'Reilly.

The Integration Minister Conor Lenihan will also address the Parnell Summer School tomorrow while the North's Education Minister Caitriona Ruane will speak on Friday.
