Rescue Operation Launched After Landslides In Roscommon

A major rescue attempt was launched in Co Roscommon on Tuesday night, after a series of landslides cut off all access to an elderly man living in the Arigna area.

The recent torrential rains led to huge mudslides in the area, which blocked all road access to the 80 year-old man's house.

A Sligo Coastguard helicopter and a fire service team were sent to the scene, but were unable to mount a rescue attempt due to adverse weather conditions.

The Sligo Mountain Rescue Team eventually reached the 80 year-old man at around 4am, but he refused to leave his home.

Heavy rains are predicted by Met Éireann to continue until the end of the week, with areas in Co Meath and Tipperary likely to be hit.
