Decrease In Uni Applications From Republic Students
Applications to Northern universities from the Republic's school leavers have fallen by 21%, according to an admissions body.
The UK's Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, commonly known as UCAS, reportedly said just 1,572 applications were made by those with addresses in the South in the year to June 30th, a significant drop from 1,993 in the previous year.
Applications to Northern universities and colleges from those on the British mainaland have also seen some variation.
English applications rose 0.8%, Scottish applications rose by 2.7%, while students from Wales felt less enthused about studying in the North with by 8.2%.
Statistics published by the Irish Central Applications Office show that applications for Irish university places have meanwhile increased by 1,143 on the previous year.
The figures come as plans by the Government to introduce a fee structure similar to that currently implemented in the UK go into consultation.
The proposals have already been criticised by the Green Party and the Progressive Democrats, who say they are not part of the Programme for Government.
