English Worker Sues Irish Taunters For €20,000
An English pipe-fitter has successfully sued his work colleagues for €20,000 after being taunted about his nationality.
The employment tribunal found his treatment amounted to racial abuse.
The man, who asked to remain anonymous, worked at the Dublin building site where, it was claimed, his co-workers gathered around him, jumped like a football crowd, and sang anti-British Irish rebel songs. One of the songs was reportedly "Some say the Devil is dead and buried in Killarney/More say he rose again and joined the British Army."
The victim told the tribunal that shortly after joining the firm in April 2006, he had to eat lunch in his car instead of the canteen due to the level of abuse.
The company rejected the harassment allegations, claiming the man never complained to his site manager about the matter. It also said the man was laid off because he had less service than other workers on the site.
The board of the Equality Tribunal found the man was racially harassed and that some of the acts were of "a blatant and intimidatory nature", before awarding him the five figure sum.
