Over 20,000 Bank Cards 'Skimmed' By Gang
Gardaí have launched a hunt for a criminal gang responsible for 'skimming' over 20,000 bank cards after posing as maintenance workers.
The gang is believed to have conducted the con by going into shops claiming to be engineers working on the terminals.
Staff are said to be used to bank officials regularly updating terminals allowing the gang to operate without suspicion.
Gardaí are now looking at hours of CCTV footage and have a list of all the card numbers used. The cards cloned by the gang in the sting operation have all been blocked or given restrictions.
The Bank of Ireland has estimated 3,100 of its debit and credit cards were affected and another eight card providers could have similar numbers of affected customers.
The Bank of Ireland said, as a temporary measure, it had reduced the daily withdrawal limit on all its debit cards for ATM transactions outside Ireland to just €100 to protect customers from fraud.
Una Dillon, Head of Card Services at the Irish Payment Services Organisation said: "We have discovered only in the last 48 hours that a number of retailers have been affected by a point-of-sale compromise.
"There will be an emergency meeting today with the gardaí, the terminal vendors and the banks to try and close down on this.
"We are in the lucky position that it was discovered quickly and the gardaí are working on it."
