It's A Plaza To Meet You - In Dublin

Dublin's shopping and pedestrian mecca is to receive a complete overhaul as it's transformed into a virtual paradisiacal pedestrian plaza.

Traffic will be completely banned from the Grafton Street corner of Dublin's St Stephen's Green where a public plaza will be created as part of works for the Metro North light-rail system.

The works will mean the iconic Fusilier's Arch at the entrance to St Stephen's Green, along with the statue of Daniel O'Connell on the capital's main thoroughfare, will be removed for four years during the construction works.

A spokesman for the Railway Procurement Agency, who are proposing the works, said: "Work is on-going with the Office of Public Works, the Department of the Environment and Dublin City Council to ensure any impacts on St Stephen's Green are kept to a minimum and to ensure that the Green can be fully reinstated after construction."

The all new plaza (artists' impression pictured) will be the first thing to meet commuters, shoppers and tourists as they head to the city's focal point, the St Steven's Green and Grafton Street intersection.

However, the proposals may expect to face some tough opposition from environmentalists, as the works will change some sections of the city's famous park forever, including the removal of up to 45 mature trees, along with various escape hatches and vents to be dug into the parks terrain.

The project is expected to be completed by 2014 if An Bord Pleanala approve the project.
