Poverty Group Seeks Protection For At Risk Groups

The Combat Poverty Agency (CPA) has called for measures to protect vulnerable groups from poverty during the current economic downturn.

The CPA says the Government has failed to tackle poverty in certain sectors of society, despite the enormous wealth it said has been created during the rise of the Celtic Tiger.

A report by the agency said poverty among lone-parent households actually increased last year and measures are needed to avoid a further increase due to the current economic problems.

The latest figures from the agency show that 7% of the population, over a quarter of a million people, are living in consistent poverty, while 17% are at risk of falling into poverty.
