Asylum Seekers End Hunger Strike

Asylum seekers living in an accommodation centre near Portlaoise have ended their hunger strike, undertaken to highlight their accusations of racism and bullying.

Members of about 70 families staying at the centre in the old Montague Hotel, in Emo, Co Laois, refused to eat all day on Monday.

However, they suspended their strike yesterday after crisis talks were promised for next Wednesday between the centre's managers, the Irish Refugee Council (IRC), and Laois-Offaly Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan.

Six men and 200 women and children occupy the centre, hailing from over 20 different nationalities.

Some of the residents have complained that the centre is rife with racist bullying and management simply threaten complainants with deportation.

Last night, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice said a team was being sent to the centre to investigate.
