Eircom Calls For Higher Charges Despite Profit Increase

The Irish Telephone company, Eircom, has said it will be levying higher charges on customers despite a significant increase in profits this year.

Eircom customers will be expected to pay on average 3.8% extra on their bills from next Tuesday. The announcement coincides with the revelation that the company experienced an 8% rise in profits last year, resulting in a €464 million surplus.

The increase in phone costs follow massive price rises of 17.5% for electricity and 20% for gas.

A company spokesman said: "The earnings are for the entire group which is largely driven by our mobile operator. The increase of 3.8% of an average impact on bills is well below inflation but we do have increasing costs the same as any other business."

However, the telephonist trader made assurances that the price rises would not affect low-income families. Eircom Chief Executive Rex Comb said the current telephone allowance scheme would be adjusted to limit the impact of the price increase on people on government allowances.
