Child Looks On As Father Engulfed In Flames

A Co Cork resident's young daughter has been left severely traumatised after a shocking fire accident.

Tragically, she looked on as her father, who was mowing a lawn, was consumed in flames during the incident.

The 37 year-old Latvian man, who was severely injured in the accident, suffered burns to an estimated 80% of his body and is in a critical condition at Cork University Hospital.

It is believed a petrol container accidentally caught fire as he was working in his garden in Blackrock in Cork.

Gardai suspect the container may have exploded as the man was preparing to mow his lawn and are treating the incident as a tragic accident.

The man was somehow covered in petrol during the incident and as he frantically tried to douse the flames, his hair and clothing also caught fire.

Horrified neighbours rushed to help the man, but he had already suffered significant burns by the time the flames were put out.

Paramedics raced to the scene and the man was rushed to hospital where - on Sunday night - he was fighting for his life in the specialist burns' unit.

The man's young daughter was just metres away when the accident occurred.

Several other children playing in the area also witnessed the horrific accident and witnesses are said to have all been left disturbed by the incident.
