Gardaí To Put Seized Alcohol On Display
Gardaí have announced they are to display all the alcohol seized by the force, taken since the introduction of their new anti-teen boozing powers.
The powers came into operation on the 30th July this year enabling Garda members to seize alcohol from under 18-year-olds or from adults in possession of alcohol in a public place.
According to gardaí, the total amount seized to date is in the region of 1,400 bottles and cans of alcohol.
The controversial new powers mean gardaí are also able to impose fixed-penalty fines for public order offences related to alcohol, while publicans or off-licences found selling alcohol to minors can now face orders for closure.
A gardaí spokesman said: "These new powers will enhance the Gardaí capacity to respond to community concerns about on-street drinking, anti social behaviour and public order issues arising in public parks and recreational areas.
"An Garda Síochána is committed to ensuring that a minority of individuals intent on misbehaving do not have a negative impact on the quality of life in local areas and deprive communities of access to public amenities through intimidating behaviour," he added.
The public display takes place today (Tuesday) in Dublin.
