Consultants Demand 9% Rise In Spending

Senior hospital staff have called for the appointment of more consultants and an increase in spending amidst the Government's present economic concerns.

The Irish Hospital Consultant's Association also said an additional 9% funding was needed to match previous assurances in the last Budget, as they said the health service should not be denied funds, even in times of a tighter national economy.

However, a recent survey of general practitioners by the Irish Medical Times has revealed GPs believe disability and hospital services will be the first to be hit by possible cutbacks in the Government's up coming emergency Budget.

According to the Medical Times, disability was cited as the number one area that was under threat from cuts, with 30% of GPs indicating it as an area that was likely to be targeted.

Hospital services, primary care, and management and administration were also seen as areas that are likely to feel the axe.

Child Dies Of Swine Flu
Ireland's Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed a child has died from a strain of influenza, linked to swine flu. It is understood the child, who was from the west of Ireland, died in a Dublin hospital within the last week. They are believed to have had the H1N1 strain of influenza, responsible for the 2009 swine flu outbreak.

HSE And Consultants Reach Agreement
Following intensive overnight talks, health service management and hospital consultants have reached an agreement on new work practices and flexibilities. The Government believes the new measures could generate up to €200 million in savings for the health service.

300 Companies Gone Bust Since New Year
The economic turmoil has hit Ireland's private sector hard as the number of companies going bust has gone up by 76% for the first half of this year. More than 300 companies have been wound up, a 76% increase on last year's figures with most of the failing companies being in the construction and engineering sector.
