Appointment Of Unemployment Facilitators Criticised
The soaring unemployment rate has prompted the Government to announce 50 new 'facilitators' to help the unemployed get back to work, but a Fine Gael spokesman has claimed the numbers "don't add up".
According to a Fianna Fail TD, Peter Kelly, the new facilitators will work with the unemployed to ensure every opportunity is being made available for them.
But Fianna Gael's Social and Family Affairs representative, Olwyn Enright has criticized the announcement saying the 50 facilitators will have to deal with 235,100 unemployed people.
"I know there are a lot of calls to get more out of our public service but suggesting one person can deal with over 8,000 people on a one-to-one basis is beyond belief," she said.
She added: "The Minister quite clearly doesn't see the scale of the problem that needs to be addressed and tinkering round the edges isn't getting to the real issues. For example, the criteria to qualify for back to education schemes should be changed."
However, Minister Peter Kelly said it was the Government's goal to provide every practical support we can to ensure that the loss of a job proves to be a temporary setback.
