A Galway professor has been reappointed to a UN Human Rights body, following elections in New York.
Michael O'Flaherty will now undertake a second term on the committee, focused on assessing members' commitment to UN treaty obligations.
The university professor won the participating state parties vote by a landslide, gaining backing from 136 of the 157 possible voters.
Human rights expert Mr O'Flaherty became the first ever Irish member of a UN Treaty Monitoring Body when he was elected four years ago.
Congratulations have been extended to Mr O'Flaherty from Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin.
Mr Martin said: "I warmly congratulate Michael O'Flaherty on his emphatic re-election to the UN Human Rights Committee.
"This is a great honour for him personally and also for Ireland. He has served with great distinction during his first term on the committee and can now make a further valuable contribution.
"Mr O'Flaherty will continue to bring to the role a wealth of practical experience and a wide knowledge of human rights issues," added the minister.
