Hopes Low As Pay Deal Talks Resume

Talks over the national pay deal resume at Government buildings in Dublin on Tuesday following their breakdown last month.

However, it is believed unions and employers are at polar opposites over reaching a national pay agreement.

Union leaders are set on securing favourable conditions for low paid workers, allowing them to deal with the recent fuel and power price hikes, but employers' body IBEC has announced it believes all employees should be treated equally.

Talks are also expected to concentrate on non-pay issues such as collective bargaining rights.

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, will not be attending this round of talks, said both sides should take notice of the prevailing economic conditions, calling it a "very challenging international environment".

Betty Tyrrell-Collard of the CPSU, which represents lower paid public service workers, said that a pay pause for her union members would be an absolute non-runner.

Unions and employers are meeting for the second day this week and have set Friday as a deadline for an outcome.
