Patient Information Stolen From HSE Worker

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed that confidential patient information has been stolen from one of its employees.

A spokesman from the health service has admitted a laptop, a blackberry and a data disc was stolen from the home of a member of staff last Wednesday.

The incident has been reported to Gardaí who are investigating the incident.

According to reports, although the laptop was password protected, the information was not encrypted.

The Executive says it is currently in the process of encrypting all its devices that contain personal data and that the process should be completed by the end of this month.

The laptop and disc contained personal information gathered for a survey on the influenza vaccine going to 1,150 healthcare workers in Autumn 2007.

The forms contain routine information similar to that requested from recipients of other vaccines; name, address, date of birth, contact telephone number, GP name and data relating to occupation.

The HSE is notifying those involved.
