Labour Hold Conference In Run Up To Dáil Return
Senior members of the Labour Party are gathering in Clonmel for their annual conference before the Dáil begins its new session.
The Dáil is due to re-convene on September 24 and the party leaders are expected to focus heavily on the state of the economy.
With economics expected to dominate the agenda over the conference's two days, party leader Eamon Gilmore has indicated the direction the party will take over the issue, notably that Ahern and Cowen are responsible for Ireland's economic woes, and not outside influences.
Minister Gilmore said on Wednesday that the immense American lending companies, Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac that have recently been bailed out by the US Government, are not the names behind Ireland's economic woes, but instead the blame should fall on the Taoiseach and former Taoiseach.
Minister Gilmore said: "We have been hearing a lot about Brian Cowen's first one hundred days - and how difficult it has been for him.
"But Brian Cowen has been in Government, not just for a hundred days but continuously for over 4,000 days and the problems he has now encountered as Taoiseach are mostly of his own making, from his past four years as Minister for Finance."
