Help From Public Leads To Major Garda Operation

An operation to curb organized crime, which has resulted in a major arms and drugs haul, wouldn’t have been possible without public help say Gardaí.

Operation Archer was set up two weeks ago to target organised crime in the Finglas area, and gardaí have revealed they have made significant seizures of drugs and firearms following the public's support.

On Saturday, a sawn-off shotgun was recovered following the search of a house in Finglas South, and two men were arrested. They were later released and a file is being prepared for the Department of Public Prosecutions.

Another search in Finglas on Monday resulted in €80,000 worth of cannabis resin being seized, and although no one was arrested, the incident is under investigation.

The following day a man was arrested and a sawn off shotgun recovered following a house search in Finglas South. The man was charged with firearms offences and will appear in court later this month.

As part of the same operation a house in Navan, Co Meath was searched on Wednesday evening. Gardaí recovered a crossbow and 10 crossbow bolts, a .45 calibre handgun and five rounds of ammunition. A house in Finglas West was subsequently searched and Gardaí seized a .22 calibre handgun. There were no arrests.

Following the weapon and drug seizures, a garda spokesman said: "Local Garda officers are crediting information received from the public as being pivotal in the success of this operation, and are calling on anyone with more information to contact them."

In a separate operation in Ballymun on Thursday morning, Gardai recovered five firearms, three sawn off shotguns and two handguns, a man in his 40's was arrested and is detained at Santry Garda station.
