Water Quality Is Another EU Rule Broken By Ireland
Ireland's EU woes are beginning to mount up as the European Court of Justice finds Ireland in breach of its obligations to waste water management.
In an embarrassing ruling for the government, the European Commission successfully argued the government failed to ensure the water waste from a number of urban areas is subjected to secondary treatment before is enters collecting systems.
The areas cited as in breach of the rules are Bray in Co Wicklow, Howth and Shanaganagh in Dublin, Letterkenny in Co Donegal, Sligo, and Tramore in Co Waterford.
Fine Gael spokesman for the environment Phil Hogan TD, has slammed the government, calling the environment minister john Gormley's failure to convince the Euro Commission he had a plan of action to resolve waste water problems as "incredible".
"It is disingenuous of Minister Gormley to try and put the responsibility for drawing up a plan of action into the hands of local authorities.
He is well aware that all our towns and villages require the necessary finance from his Department to ensure that the necessary capital works to upgrade our sewerage treatment plants is implemented."
The findings come in the wake of Ireland breaching their borrowing / spending limits also imposed by the EU, all of which is taking place in the shadow of the No Vote result in the Lisbon treaty.
